The different

Types we offer

Heat Pumps come in 3 forms, Air Source, Ground Source and Water Source. In the past Ground and Water Source were the most efficient technologies with the lowest running costs. However with the latest refrigerant and compressor technology Optimus Heating have many Air Source Heat Pump installs which have achieved the same and in some cases better efficiencies than their Ground and Water source cousins.

The big difference between the technologies are the installation costs. Ground Source heat pumps require extensive ground works to create a horizontal trench or boreholes for the brine loops. Ground Source come into their own in very large properties where the heat load of the property is huge.

In most properties and Air Source Heat Pump will be much cheaper to install and will achieve the same results.

How does an

Air Source Heat Pump work?

Air Source Heat Pumps have been around for a very long time, most of us have them in our houses already in the form of a fridge. The refrigerant in an air source has a boiling point down to minus 25 degrees. The fan pulls air over the refrigerant which start to boil, the refrigerant then transfers its boiling energy to the water in your heating system. A well designed heat pump can use 1 unit of electrical energy to generate 5 units of heat, we refer to this as 500% efficiency.

Why is

500% efficiency important?

With Gas prices being roughly 4 times cheaper than electricity any heat pump with over 400% efficiency will be cheaper to run than a gas boiler. A heat pump with an efficiency over 450% will mean that the compressor is not working very hard at all to produce your heating and hot water. That will result in the heat pump lasting for many years and running whisper quietly, we expect our installs to last between 20 – 25 years and when they are running you will struggle to hear them.
